PART 1
INT: PCEMS SOUTH WORK ROOM - NIGHT
MARTY (21, EMT, graffiti artist, smarter than she looks), in a new, clean uniform, is seated at the front of the room. JOYCE (53, inspector, medic, tough but willing to teach younger staff) and MARK (25, medic, supervisor, thinks he's hot, daddy got him this job) are organizing their paperwork at a front table.
LUKE (40, medic, refuses to be promoted, father figure and trainer to most everyone in the station) is sitting at another table; he is surrounded by MANNY (27, medic), DAVE (25, EMT), LUIS (30, paramedic, retired Army Ranger/medic), and BEVIER (29, EMT). Mark has his mask hanging from an ear, but everyone else has their mask on properly. As part of their uniform, all EMS workers will have their masks on properly when in contact with patients or any other people.

MANNY
Did you see the rig after they got you
guys out?

LUKE
It's still kind of a blur, to be honest.
I'm just glad they got Coop out in one
piece.

LUIS
I'm just glad they cleared you right away.
We've been getting killed lately.

LUKE
C'mon; it's not like I can't walk and
talk.

DAVE
And start an IV.

SUE (32, medic, worried about what her ex is doing to her kids) and CHARLIE (26, EMT, nice guy, enjoys the rush of working for EMS) come in from the locker room. Sue has her personal bag with her, and she has her mask on properly. Charlie puts his mask on as they talk.

LUKE
Unlike the last four people you've had.

MANNY
Five, Chief. We've had five wash out in
four weeks.

LUKE
Better now than later. Hey, T, Keegan.

CHARLIE
You are here. All right.

SUE
Good to see you, Robs.

LUKE
Where's your bag, Keeg?

LUIS
At home.

MANNY
At a hospital somewhere.

SUE
It's in Nicky's car.

LUKE
Good place for it.

JOYCE
All right, ladies and gentlemen.

Everyone but Joyce finds a seat. Mark puts his mask on properly.

CHARLIE
(to Luke)
Welcome back, man.

JOYCE
Item one: we have some personnel changes.
First, welcome back, Robbins.
(Luke acknowledges her)
Next, we have a new EMT, Cameron. So,
we're a full shift tonight.

MANNY
For now.

JOYCE
For a while, Henriquez. Item two: you
need to clean up after yourselves. There
is no excuse for coffee spills in the cab
or cigarette butts anywhere in the
ambulance.
(Luis raises his hand)
I'm not accusing you, Donovan, I know
you're not the only smoker, but don't
make our lives harder than it has to be.
Item three: North station is holding a
call review on Sunday at noon. You need
to call them to pre-register. Last item:
they still haven't found the sniper on
28th Street, so be safe. Any questions?
(there are none)
Okay then.

MARK
(standing)
Terell and Keegan in 519. Henriquez and
Bevier in 518. Donovan and King in 514.
Robbins and Cameron in 512. I'm your
supervisor for tonight.

CRAIG
Who's our lieutenant?

JOYCE
We're on our own 'til Fitch comes in.
Anything else?
(short pause)
Let's go, folks.

Luke gets his bag and goes to Marty as the others head out to the ambulances.

LUKE
Luke Robbins.

MARTY
Marty Cameron.

LUKE
You got your stuff?

Marty pulls her bag from under the table.

LUKE (CONT’D)
Good. How many masks do you have?
(Marty shows a full box of 10)
Good. Don't share those with anyone.
You won't get more 'til next week.

MARTY
(puts box in her bag)
Good to know.

LUKE
You got a vest?

MARTY
Already on.

LUKE
Kevlar?

MARTY
Yeah.

LUKE
Front and back chest plates?

MARTY
Already in place. I got the search gloves,
too.

LUKE
Good. What's in the bag?

MARTY
What I need to get through the night.

LUKE
(smiles a little)
All right. Who'd you do your ride-alongs
with?

MARTY
I didn't yet.
(Luke isn't pleased)
It's okay. I used to ride at school.

LUKE
Better than nothing. C'mon then. You can
put that clipboard away, we do everything
on the computer here.

DISPATCH

LUKE
Go ahead.

INT: APARTMENT LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
A young man has shot himself in the mouth with a shotgun; the man is lying on the floor, and the gun has fallen away from him. A police officer is standing in the front doorway, his gun drawn. Luke is next to the cop. Marty moves to help the young man. Everyone but the patient has their mask and gloves on properly.

COP
Damn.

LUKE
Don't bother, Cam.
(she looks to him)
There's nothing to do.

MARTY
Sure there is.

LUKE
All right. Go ahead and look then.

Marty kneels close to the man, doing her best to stay out of the blood.

LUKE (CONT’D)
(into radio)
88-512 to control.

As Luke talks, Marty rolls the young man over to find a huge hole in the back of the man's head. Marty checks to see if she can do anything to stem the tide of blood and brain matter.

LUKE (CONT’D)
I'll wait up here for Errol.

MARTY
It's okay, Robbins.

LUKE
Go on; you can start writing your first
report.

Marty takes her gloves off, stands, and grabs the crash kit and the backboard.

MARTY
You got the rest?

LUKE
Yeah. Thanks.

Marty leaves with the gear.
EXT: 32ND STREET & RIVERSIDE AVE - LATER
Marty is sitting on the back bumper of the ambulance. A supervisor's car and a morgue vehicle are behind the ambulance. Marty stands when Luke and Mark come out the apartment building. Luke has the defib/monitor. Both Luke and Mark have removed their gloves.

MARK
So, that's it then. You guys need any
gear?

LUKE
(putting monitor away)
Nope. We'll see you later.

MARK
(to Marty)
He's not bothering you yet, is he?

MARTY
Nope. It's all good.

MARK
Let me know if you need anything, okay?

MARTY
(smiles politely)
Sure.

LUKE
Go on, Errol. We've got this.

Mark gets in his vehicle and drives off.

MARTY
What's up with him?

LUKE
Hormones, probably.

MARTY
Great. We done here?

LUKE
Looks like it. We've been released by
the supervisor. You write it up yet?

MARTY
It's in front.

LUKE
(short pause)
You know you couldn't do anything.

MARTY
I could've tried something.

LUKE
Can't do anything for someone whose mind
is already made up.

Marty doesn't have an answer.

LUKE (CONT'D)
Hell of a way to start the day.

DISPATCH
(over radio)
Control to 88-512. 10-20?

MARTY
No shit. You ready?

LUKE
Let's go.

As they get their information, Marty and Luke get into the cab of the ambulance; Marty is driving. She turns the emergency lights on.

MARTY
(into radio)

Riverside Ave and 3-2.

code 2 to 3-1-2 First Ave. Police en
route, 10-28.

Without using the siren, Marty gets into traffic on Riverside Avenue heading towards Third Street.
INT: HALLWAY - NIGHT
Charlie, Sue, Luke, and Marty are waiting in the second floor hallway of a five-story walk-up. There are a couple of cops, wearing their masks correctly, keeping the crowd of neighbors, who are mostly unmasked, away from the door to apartment 2D, but there isn't a lot of room for the police or EMS to work. Screaming and yelling is heard from apartment 2D. Charlie and Marty are each holding a backboard and the crash kits; Luke and Sue are carrying the defib/monitors. The four EMS workers have gloves on.

LUKE
We all know what we're going to do, right?

SUE
Keegan and I have the kid, you've got the
mother or whoever.

MARTY
What if there's more than two patients?

LUKE
Then you and I are triaging.

CHARLIE
We can do that, Chief.

LUKE
Kid's gotta learn sometime. Anyway, let's
not bring anything ugly on.

There is a crash, a moment of silence, then a cop comes out of apartment 2D. Their mask is on properly.
COP
We've got three, but one's staying in our
custody.

INT: APARTMENT 2D - SAME
There has been a huge fight in the apartment. There is blood in the kitchen, hall, bathroom, and in one of the three bedrooms. A cop is holding KESHA (12, left in charge by working parents) in the kitchen; Kesha has open cuts on her left shoulder and forehead, and she is handcuffed. She doesn't have a mask on. There is a bloody steam iron on the floor next to Kesha and the cop. The cop's mask is on properly. The bathroom door is closed, and there is a revolver on the hallway floor near the bathroom door. The first cop leads Marty, Sue, Luke, and Charlie into the apartment.

COP (CONT'D)
(to adults)
One's in here, one's in the bathroom, and
the other's in the bedroom. This one is
staying with us.

SUE
Who got shot?

COP
In the bedroom.

Charlie and Sue take their gear to the bedroom.

LUKE
Cam, take her. I'm going to the bathroom.

Luke takes the backboard to the bathroom, but he finds the door locked.

KESHA
He killed my brother. Why isn't he going
to jail?

MARTY
So, what happened here?

KESHA
Shut up. It don't matter.

MARTY
We'll stop the bleeding anyway.

KESHA
My brother's dead. It doesn't matter
anymore.

MARTY
What's your name?

KESHA
Why aren't you listening to me? He's dead.

MARTY
You were protecting your brother, so you
did the right thing.
(Kesha is silent)
My name's Marty. Does anything else hurt?

Marty reaches to move Kesha's hair, and Kesha moves her head away.

COP 2
Settle down, girl; you hear me?

MARTY
Anything else hurt besides your head or
shoulder?

KESHA
No.

INT: BEDROOM - SAME
Sue and Charlie are treating an 8 year old boy who's been shot in the chest. The boy has been intubated, and Charlie is bagging the boy. The boy has been hooked up to the monitor; it is showing a pulse of 180. Sue has covered the bullet hole in the boy's chest and is covering the hole in the boy's back. The cop is standing by the door.

CHARLIE
How bad?

SUE
Not good. Let me get a line in.
